OLED displays viewing angles are more enhanced than standard
LCD displays. This is due the emissive dot being closer to the outer surface of
the display than with LCDs.
OLED viewing angles are up to 175 degrees from all viewing
directions. Though OLEDs are all emissive, there is an option for sunlight
readable technology, making these displays suitable for all applications.
Colours range from yellow, green, yellow/green, red, blue,
white, and RGB. All OLED displays are in negative mode (emissive). Therefore,
the colours are displayed on a black background, e.g. yellow characters on a
black background.
As these transmissive displays do not require a backlight,
they have a very low profile height. OLED bezels heights are around 5mm,
compared to LCD which is around 10mm.
OLED displays also have a faster response time than the
standard LCD displays. LCD displays are capable of a 2ms to 8ms response time
offering a frame rate of 200Hz, an OLED theoretically has less than a 0.01ms
response time enabling 100,000 Hz refresh rates.
OLED displays will use around 40% of the power of an LED
backlit LCD displaying an image, which is primarily black, for the majority of
images it will consume 60-80% of the power of an LCD display. An example of
OLED power consumption against an STN LCD display: OLED supply current is 10mA,
whereas the LCD is 100mA. Standard LCD displays have an operating temperature
of 0°C to +50°C (or ‐20°C to +70°C for wide temperature LCDs).
OLEDs can operate in temperature from ‐40°C to +80°C, as
standard. The standard character OLED displays, supplied by Midas Components,
all have 4 built in character sets. These are: English, Japanese, Western
European, and Cyrillic.
